Nose Anatomy

The nose serves a vital role as part of our respiratory system and is also one of the most important structures determining the esthetic harmony of our face. The esthetic appearance of the nose directly affects facial proportions, while its anatomical structure forms the foundation for healthy breathing.

Basic Structures of the Nose

The nose consists of two main parts: the external nose and the internal nose (nasal cavity). Both are evaluated from functional and esthetic perspectives.

1. External Nose
This is the visible part of the face and includes the following structures:

  • Nasion (Nasal root): The area where the forehead meets the nose.

  • Dorsum nasi (Nasal bridge): The straight or slightly curved upper part of the nose.

  • Tip: The foremost part of the nose, often the primary area shaped during esthetic rhinoplasty.

  • Alar (Nasal wings): The outer edges of the nostrils.

  • Nares (Nostrils): The openings through which air enters the nose.

2. Internal Nose (Nasal Cavity)
The internal structure of the nose is crucial for respiration and the sense of smell:

  • Nasal septum: A structure made of cartilage and bone that divides the nose into two equal chambers. Septal deviation can cause breathing difficulties.

  • Turbinates (Nasal conchae): Responsible for humidifying, warming, and filtering inhaled air. There are inferior, middle, and superior turbinates.

  • Sinuses: Air-filled cavities located within the bones surrounding the nose, contributing to voice resonance and mucus production.

Functional and Balance

Esthetic nasal procedures aim not only to improve the external appearance but also to preserve or enhance respiratory function. In individuals seeking esthetic nasal surgery, both esthetic expectations and functional needs should be considered.

Rhinoplasty (esthetic nose surgery) not only reshapes the nose but can also correct anatomical abnormalities that cause nasal obstruction. Therefore, a detailed evaluation of nasal anatomy is essential to achieve successful and natural results.
