Abdominoplasty

With proper nutrition and targeted muscle training, unwanted fat deposits can be reduced, and the skin and underlying tissues can be tightened. However, following pregnancies or significant weight loss or gain, damage may already have occurred to the supporting structures within the subcutaneous tissue. As a result, loose skin and excess tissue may remain.

During a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), sagging abdominal soft tissues (commonly known as an abdominal pannus or excess skin and fat apron) are removed. If necessary, the underlying abdominal muscles are also tightened to achieve a flatter, firmer, and more aesthetically defined abdominal contour.

TOTAL TUMMY TUCK – TOTAL ABDOMINOPLASTY

During a full tummy tuck (total abdominoplasty), the surgeon removes a horizontally oriented, spindle-shaped area of excess skin and tissue. The incision is placed parallel to the pubic hairline, allowing the resulting scar to remain as discreet as possible. Toward the sides, the incision extends upward in a W-shaped pattern and reaches the hip bones.

The abdominal skin is separated from the underlying muscles, starting from the hip bones and, if necessary, extending up to the rib cage. This allows the abdominal wall to be pulled downward by approximately ten centimeters and tightened. The surgeon removes the excess skin. If there is weakness or separation of the abdominal wall, the muscle layer is additionally tightened with sutures. The belly button is carefully released and preserved in its original position.

Afterwards, the wound edges are closed and sutured in multiple layers. Only at the final stage is a new opening created in the tightened abdominal skin, and the belly button is repositioned and sutured into place. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and takes approximately 4 hours, with a 3-day hospital stay.

MINI TUMMY TUCK – MINI ABDOMINOPLASTY

In a mini tummy tuck or mini abdominoplasty, only the lower abdominal area below the belly button is tightened. As the name suggests, it is a smaller and more limited procedure compared to a full tummy tuck.

Combined with Liposuction; The upper abdomen, waist, and hips can additionally be treated with liposuction to further improve body contour. This procedure is particularly suitable when the main concern is loose abdominal skin located below the belly button. The operation is performed under general anesthesia and takes approximately 2 hours, with a 2-day hospital stay.

Risks and Recovery

As with any surgical procedure, there is a risk of infection and, in rare cases, tissue necrosis (tissue death). In addition, patients may experience short-term hematomas (bruising caused by blood accumulation) following the procedure.

Drainage tubes placed during the surgery help prevent the negative effects of possible postoperative bleeding and the accumulation of tissue fluid. They are usually removed after approximately two days.

Specific possible complications following a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) include impaired blood circulation of the umbilicus (belly button) and umbilical deformities. Minor asymmetries in the scar line and abdominal contour can be difficult to completely prevent.

The operated skin may initially feel numb or have reduced sensation; however, full sensory function typically returns within approximately six months.

The compression garment provided after your surgery should be worn continuously for the following 6 weeks to support healing and achieve an optimal result. During this 6-week period, you should avoid sports activities and strenuous physical exercise.
